Types of Breast Reduction

Breast Reduction

Breast reduction surgeries are one of the top 5 cosmetic surgeries performed among women.Breast reduction surgeries help relieve the pain caused by large, droopy breasts that put a lot of pressure on the back, neck, and shoulders. The heavy bust needs to be supported by a thick bra, and the bra straps end up making indentations on the shoulders. On top of these problems, it also has a major influence on the self-image of the woman.

So, how is breast reduction surgery carried out? Well, there are three different types of breast reduction surgeries used to reduce breast size surgically:

1) The Vertical Breast Reduction

Also known as the lollipop technique, this procedure involves the breast being reduced vertically. Women with moderately large breasts opt for this technique. The breasts are first opened around the areola and the middle of the breasts. The excess breast tissue is then removed from this incision along with the excess skin. The areola and nipple are repositioned on the breast at a more aesthetic location.

2) The Anchor Scar

The Anchor Scar technique is named so, owing to the scar it leaves post-surgery. This type of breast reduction surgery leaves an anchor-shaped scar on the bottom of the breast. This is because the surgeon makes an anchor-like incision or an upside-down ‘T-shaped’ incision at the bottom of the breast. This technique helps remove all the excess breast tissue and skin easily. The surgeon then reshapes and recontours the breasts giving them a natural lift and placing them in an aesthetically more pleasing position.

3) Liposuction

Women who need mild breast reduction can opt for this technique. Women with more of fatty breast tissue and good skin elasticity can undergo this type of breast reduction surgery. This helps in providing a shorter, less invasive option that gives virtually undetectable scars on the breasts.

4) Recovery After A Breast Reduction Surgery

Breast reduction surgery is performed under general anesthesia. Depending on the type of breast reduction technique, the incisions are made on the breast. The cosmetic surgeon will remove the excess breast tissue, fat, and skin from the breast. This helps in moving the nipple/areola higher up and in a more forward position on the chest. This makes the breasts look full and perky without making them sag. The remaining breast tissue, fat, and skin is reshaped and closed properly with the help of dissolvable sutures.

Breast reduction surgery is usually a daycare procedure. Post-surgery, the patient is kept for supervision in recovery. After a few hours, the patient can go home the same day. Expect some soreness and pain around the surgical site for a few days. Once the pain medicines kick in, the patient feels relieved from pain discomfort. Ice packs help in alleviating the discomfort.

Post-surgery patient is advised to avoid strenuous exercise, chect work outs for 3-4 weeks. The patient can resume normal activities with ease. There is a sense of immediate freedom and an increase in self-confidence after the surgery. The burden finally feels lifted off, and they can wear all the clothes they want without a second thought.

Swelling, soreness, and tingling are common after the surgery. There is no need to worry about either of these symptoms.
