Lip Reduction

Pouts and fuller looking lips have always been celebrated by social media. But in some cases, the lips could be exceptionally large for your own liking and make you quite conscious about the same. A simple procedure that could come to the rescue in such situations is lip reduction. We have all heard of lip augmentation where smaller lips can be enhanced to appear plumper. With lip reduction surgery abnormally large lips can be corrected in such a way that the upper and lower lip seem harmonious to each other. The end result will also give lips that are balanced with the other features of the face.

Large lips could also interfere with eating, drinking or speaking as well. The condition when a person has lips larger than the normal size is  called Macrocheilia and a lip reduction surgery is what can be done to reduce the volume of your lips and give them shape u desire. When done by an experienced and board-certified plastic surgeon, lip reduction procedure that is also known as Cheiloplasty is quite safe and can prove to be a great boost to the self-esteem. The result of a lip reduction surgery is permanent and this surgery is often done alone or even in conjunction with other procedures like chin augmentation, jaw augmentation or rhinoplasty.

Another thing to note is that lip reduction is not just done for cosmetic reasons but also for medical issues. Those suffering from macrocheilia could have impaired oral function and the insufficient seal between the upper and the lower lip may cause drooling and other complications. This condition can affect the speech pattern and functionality. Macrocheilia can happen due to reasons like general thickening of the tissues, dentofacial deformities, hemangiomas, glandular hypertrophy and inflammatory or lymphedematous infiltration. If your unusually large lips are getting in the way of your oral functions or affecting speech or if you want it improved for aesthetic reasons then you are an eligible candidate for lip reduction surgery. You just need to be in good general health and a non-smoker.

During the lip reduction procedure, local or general anesthesia is generally used. The size of one or both the lips is reduced by making of a horizontal incision on the inside of the lip. Excess lip mucosa and tissue are then removed from the lip. The surgeon will then use stitches to close the incision.

Lip reduction surgery is generally done on an out-patient basis and allows the patient to return home on the day of the surgery itself. This procedure takes around 20 minutes for each lip. The stitches are removed after a week. You can return to work within a week and the best results of the surgery are usually visible around two or three months after the lip reduction surgery. One can expect some swelling which may last for 7-10 days, also you will be advised to eat soft non spicy food for a few days.
