Thigh Liposuction

Overview

Thigh liposuction is a procedure performed on the inner and outer areas of the upperthighs to suction and remove excess fat from those areas. Thighs are one of the most difficult areas of the body to lose fat from. Some individuals have a genetic predisposition to have heavy thighs or lower legs.

Thigh Liposuction

Thigh liposuction helps provide a better proportion to an individual’s body with respect to their upper body. Excess fat on the inner aspect of the thigh is extremely uncomfortable as they rub against each other during movement and cause chafing. On the other hand, excess fat on the outer aspect of the thigh is referred to as “saddlebags”, which gives a disproportionate appearance to the thighs. They appear short as compared to the rest of the body. The fat in the thigh area has two layers of fat, as compared to most areas of the body, like the torso or the back, which have 3 layers. Due to this, the result of liposuction in the thigh is better than most other areas of the body. The hormones in females cause the fat to deposit around the thighs, buttocks, and pelvis, due to which more females undergo thigh liposuction than males.Individuals who seek thigh liposuction should know that it is not a weight-loss method. It is not a substitute for diet control and routine exercise. It is best to removefat from small, concentrated areas.

Individuals with a weak immune system, poor blood circulation, bleeding disorders, or uncontrolled diabetes are not advised to undergo thigh liposuction. The best results for thigh liposuction are achieved in individuals with good overall health and good skin elasticity so that the skin does not sag or has a loose appearance.

Procedure

Thigh liposuction is performed under local or regional anaesthesia by a surgeon, though general anaesthesia may be used in some cases. The target area is marked before the procedure. The procedure can be performed on the inner thigh, the outer thigh or, a combination of both. 2 small incisions are made and a steel cannula is inserted through them. The fat cells are broken up and suctioned using a vacuum. The fat and fluid being lost are replaced by IV fluids in volume.

Recovery

There is pain, swelling, and bruising in the thigh which is normal. The doctor will prescribe some painkillers and antibiotics.Individuals need to be away from work for 5-7 days. Light exercise and regular physical activity can be resumed in 4 weeks and full recovery takes 6-8 weeks. It takes 3 months for the full results to show.

Risks

Infection, bleeding, and adverse reaction to anaesthesia are common after any kind of surgery, including thigh liposuction. Various other risks are:

  • Fat embolism – Pieces of loose fat can enter a blood vessel and block it. It can lead to stroke or heart and lung problems. It is a medical emergency.
  • Injury to any surrounding nerve or blood supply.
  • Contour irregularities – Due to uneven fat removal, poor healing, and poor elasticity of the skin, the skin over the treated area can appear lumpy or wavy. It can be permanent.
